Welcome 2017 with a bang!

Things to do on the last day of the year

Three, two, one … Happy New Year!

New Year’s Day marks the start of the new year in the Gregorian calendar (the Gregorian calendar is internationally the most widely used civil calendar). The calendar is named after Pope Gregory XIII, who introduced it in October 1582.

Many people have the day off work as it is a public holiday, and many New Year celebrations are enjoyed outdoors in South Africa because of the warm summer weather. Friends and family customarily come together on 31 December and celebrate the end of the one year, and the start of the next.

South Africa’s Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 determines that if a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday shall be a public holiday. New Year’s Day 2017 is a Sunday, so the following Monday will be a public holiday too.

Public transport is not affected and is usually busier than normal. Formal commercial institutions such as banks, post offices and small businesses are closed for business, but restaurants and other entertainment outlets are open, some with shortened hours.

Things to do in Gauteng on New Year’s Day:

• Hot-air-ballooning over the Magaliesberg. Picture waking up before dawn on the first of January. Not particularly inviting – unless you’re going on a balloon safari and will soon be floating over game in the Pilansberg Nature Reserve or the golden, undulating Magaliesberg mountains, followed by a champagne breakfast and delicious fry-up.

• Masquerade Ball at Chicago Piano Bar. Unleash your mysterious side! This 1920’s-themed dinner theatre and bar offers a dance option or a three course sit-down dinner and dance. Tickets cost R395 for a dinner, dance and party shooters, and R190 for just the dance at Chicago’s Piano Bar, corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and Duiker Street, Randpark Ridge. Contact 011 794 3383 to book.

• 80’s Rewind in Pretoria. Prepare yourself for the big hair, loud fashion and the best of 80’s music at an 80’s tribute rock concert at the Barnyard Theatre. Tickets cost R390.

Have a blessed 2017!
