Two unexpected New Year’s Day babies

Both babies were only due much later, but were born on 1 January.

For many South Africans, 2016 was not the greatest year.

From natural disasters like floods and hail storms, to bad economic conditions, the year left many with holes in their pockets and frowns on their faces.

But for the Verster family, 2016 gave way to the most incredible New Year’s Day gift – a beautiful and healthy baby girl named Abigail. She was born at about 8am and is the couple’s first child.

Her parents, Martin and Julie, were married in April 2016 and a few months later they discovered they were expecting a honeymoon baby. What they did not expect was that this tiny human would be born on this special day.

“She was only due in late January,” Julie said. “She was born prematurely, but we were fortunate enough to make it to 36 weeks.”

Martin said he was exited when he found out she would be born on 1 January. “I mean it is cool that she was born on that day because it is so special.”

Abigail weighed 2,2kg at birth and is incredibly small.

Abigail Verster was one of the town's first New Year's Day babies and was born at 8am in Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital. She weighed a mere 2,2kg and her entire hand is as big as half her father's index finger.

“We have never done this parenting thing before, so we are a little worried, but I’m sure we will learn quickly,” Martin said.

On the same day another baby was born prematurely and is currently in Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

The News was not allowed to take a picture of the baby, but appeals to the community to keep this family and their baby in their prayers on their road to recovery.
