Stop! Because the sign says so!

Motorist will get a fine of R500 if they do not obey the stop sign.

It’s an accident waiting to happen.

Krugersdorp High School (KHS) is highly concerned about the safety of their learners before, during and after school hours for one simple reason.

Frustrated people recently took to Facebook to complain about motorists who do not respect the rules of the road. One person even took a video showing that not even one motorist obeyed the stop sign near one of the entrances of KHS on Shannon Road. The video clearly shows how several motorists blatantly ignore the stop sign; not even slowing down, despite the road markings and the road signs being clearly visible. Those motorists obviously do not think about the safety of the pedestrians – in this case school children.

According to Marcel Hugli, chairperson of the KHS School Governing Body (SGB), all other schools in Krugersdorp have speed bumps to ensure the safety of their learners, but KHS’ request was denied.

Principal Ivan Bailey told the News that there had been an incident in the past when two girls were hit by a car that had skipped the stop sign.

“Who is going to take the blame when a leaner gets hit again or if someone gets killed?” Bailey asked.

The main problem lies with motorists being impatient and disregarding the rules of the road. The school believes that if speed bumps are erected their problems will be something of the past.

According to Mogale City Traffic Department spokesperson, Papi Motaung, he will investigate the problem area himself and motorists who fail to stop or obey the rules of the road will be fined R500.

KHS is willing to cover the cost of the speed bumps, but they need the council’s permission to have them put up.

There is reason to believe that council is hesitant to put up speed bumps on Shannon Road because emergency vehicles often use this road.

For now, Motaung warns that the law will be enforced.
