Ikusasa gets a special visitor

The Miss SA semi-finalist says she fell in love with the development centre.

She has been described as a person with a beautiful heart making a difference in her community.

Shelbe Pretorius (Miss South Africa 2017 semi-finalist) in conjunction with the Young Adults Group is making a difference in local communities. Rhema West Christian Church has its own Young Adults Group and they decided to make the wish of the children at the Ikusasa Community Development Centre come true.

According to Shelbe, she visited the library last year and the Ikusasa Community Development building caught her eye. She then decided to go in and see what Ikusasa is all about.

“The children there had only one wish and that was a pair of new shoes for each of them,” said Shelbe.

Ikusasa aims to break the cycle of abuse in children’s lives and facilitates healing and re-integration into the community. They follow a holistic approach where the physical, educational, emotional and spiritual needs of child victims are met. Teenagers also participate in an independent living programme to prepare them for life outside the children’s home.

Recently the Young Adults group, together with Pastor Ronnie Pretorius, who is Shelby’s father, and other members of the church, made the children’s wish come true by handing out a pair of shoes to each of them. Shelby also made sure that the children were entertained with a dance by Jessie Potgieter. In addition, an inspirational speech was given by body-builder Rudi Pretorius, and Pastor Ronnie gave the children some soul food by praising the Lord.

“I feel so fulfilled by my job,” said Project Manager, Donald Nyinenda.

Nyinenda told the News they make sure that each and every child goes to school and they can proudly say that they had a 99,9 per cent pass rate in 2016.

People who would like to become part of the Rhema West Christian Church can meet them at Silverstar in the Platinum Ballroom, every Sunday at 9am.
