Every day should be hugging day!
National Hug Day encourages everyone to hug family and friends more often.
A hug lets someone know you care without having to say a word.
National Hug Day is an event dedicated to hugging that occurs annually on January 21. The day was first celebrated on January 21, 1986 in Clio, Michigan in the United States of America.
It’s been reported that hugging has become the favourite social greeting when teenagers meet or part these days. The idea of National Hug Day is to encourage everyone to hug family and friends more often. While some encourage hugging everyone, National Hugging Day always suggests asking first.
Hugs make us feel happy. When we hug another person, our bodies release oxycontin, a hormone associated with happiness, according to scientific studies. It is also believed that hugs can reduce stress. A hugging heart is a healthy heart. Research from University of North Carolina has shown that a good hug helps ease blood flow and lower cortisol levels, which in turn helps lower your heart rate.
Whatever your age, hugging can be fun and is therapeutic. So start hugging friends, family, loved ones – and maybe a stranger – today, and substitute a handshake with a hug.
