Elderly embrace Active Ageing Games

The different activities the elderly took part in included passing the ball, brisk walking, soccer, rugby-ball throw, athletics, jukskei and relay races.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development and the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation recently joined forces to host the Regional Active Ageing Games at Azaadville Stadium.

The Active Ageing Games is an annual event for senior citizens, aimed at keeping the elderly active by participating in recreational activities. The event, which took place on Friday, 28 July, is a build-up event that will culminate in the Provincial Games. The Games encourage the elderly people in the province to lead a healthy lifestyle, thus reducing ailments associated with elders, such as arthritis, stress and high blood pressure.

A West Rand squad will be chosen from among the regional participants to compete at the provincial competition, and if they are successful, they will progress to the national games. These games have assisted in providing an Active Aging society and sustainable institutional support for the successful implementation of Active Aging Games.

More than 650 senior citizens of different age groups ranging from 55 to 89 years old, both male and female, including some physically challenged people, from rural, semi-rural urban and semi-urban areas of the West Rand took part in the different activities which included passing the ball, brisk walking, soccer, rugby-ball throw, athletics, jukskei and relay races.

Christina Masilela-Khumalo, social worker from the Gauteng Department of Social Development said, “We will continue supporting you.

We want to ensure you are healthy and happy.”
