Strong, intelligent and beautiful – the Iron Lady in blue, leader of the West Rand Police Cluster

The (female) force behind the West Rand Police Cluster – Major General Anna Mateisi.

As the country observes and acknowledges the month of August as Women’s Month, the police of the West Rand Cluster made an effort to celebrate their women in blue and sent them on a pampering three-day trip to Durban.

The programme included Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) which addresses women on their responsibilities at their workplaces and homes. Major General Mateisi, West Rand Police Cluster commander, attended the event to motivate and inspire the women she serves with. She explained the Police code of conduct as well as the dress code, and show the women how to unleash their full potential.

Mateisi is also the Gauteng Women’s Network Champion and the National Women’s Network Deputy Chairperson. She applies leadership skills that one could say were taught by Nelson Mandela, as they keep his philosophy of ‘leading from the back’ alive. This strategy exposes junior officers to leadership roles and strengthens their decision-making abilities.

Women experience many hurdles that make the journey upward difficult. The rise towards positions of power and influence in a myriad spheres is especially challenging.

“Whether forging their own paths or following in the footsteps of those who’ve gone ahead, these trailblazers, innovators, and explorers can encourage, motivate and push us to reach new heights,” said Iron Lady, Major General Anna Mateisi.

Women increasingly occupy top-ranking positions and roles in a traditionally male-dominated industries. Women like Mateisi portray themselves in this environment as adaptable and self-motivated. Her courage is clearly visible to those who work closely with her.

She believes that the combination of education and hard work always yields good results and reveals the potential that women have. Unfortunately, some women under-estimate and undermine themselves.

“In my role as the Provincial Women’s Network Champion, I have to ensure that my team and I address issues that affect our members, whether they be personal or work-related.

We strive to find ways to intervene and assist where we can. We are privileged that our organisation is well-equipped and able to help all our members. Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. And when you stumble, keep faith.”

Mateisi is a humble leader who is aware of her surroundings and knows her path. She is not afraid to ask questions to bring herself up to date with information. She accepts advice from junior member and doesn’t hesitate to express her appreciation to members for their inputs.
