Locals reach out to those in need

For quite some time, a trio of residents has been driving around town, wondering how they can help the people living on the streets.

We live in an era in which it’s not hard to grow a thick skin and tend to look the other way where poverty is involved. This is why a team of local residents decided to approach this issue hands-on.

For quite some time, Mira Petrou, her son Alec and a close family friend, Esnath Masiiwa, have been driving around town, wondering how they can help the people living on the streets.

“Every time we would go out for take-aways we would stop and donate half of our meals to some hungry tummy on our way home. My son actually started doing this quite some time ago,” Mira said.

“After a while of doing this, we started thinking of ways we could help these peoples more, and on a larger scale. We really wanted to do something for the community.”

This is when Mira came up with the initiative of driving around town with bread and a pot of soup, distributing to anyone in need along the way.

Even though this team has only been at it for a month, they aim to keep on doing this once a week on Thursdays or Fridays. Their main focus is senior citizens but they won’t hesitate to give to anyone in need.

They have already distributed roughly 80 meals across town and hope to build a relationship with each of the people in need.

“We want to inspire and motivate them. We want to show them a way because there are countless sad stories that accompany these poor souls. But somehow most of them have found a way to stay positive through it all – it’s quite amazing actually,” Mira said.

In the near future they would like to hand out cards with motivational messages as a form of encouragement and inspiration. According to Mira it’s astonishing the lengths these people go to just to survive.

The trio would also like to encourage others in the community to give back where they can.
