Disabled children spread their wings
With ‘Wings’ as this year’s theme learners with physical and learning disabilities made sure to overcome their disabilities as much as possible.
“Children with disabilities are like butterflies with a broken wing. They are just as beautiful as all the rest, but need a little help spreading their wings” — Anonymous.
For the past several months more than 260 ‘butterflies’ from the West Rand School prepared for their revue which is held every second year and serves as the school’s largest fundraiser.

With Wings as this year’s theme, learners with both physical and learning disabilities between the ages of three and 18 years gave their all to give their supporters only their best performance.
The revue focuses on a story about a time-travelling World War II pilot who faces various obstacles in a time that’s not his.

The children and their teachers can’t wait to show the rest of the West Rand what they’ve got, as they don’t allow their disabilities to restrict them in any way.
“We are so privileged to have such an amazing group of children and educators. All the décor and 90 per cent of all costumes were put together by this outstanding team of teachers,” said deputy principal Leonore Coetzer.
The school will host five performances in total. The first and only day performance will be on Thursday, 7 September. The other performances will take place from 11 to 14 September at 7pm at West Rand School.
Tickets are available at R30, R50 and R80 respectively.
