Learners taught the value of nutrition
South Africa is reported to be currently experiencing a sharp increase in the numbers of overweight and obese children and adolescents.
Nestlé South Africa hosted over 400 learners at Phatudi Primary School in Munsieville, as part of the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme, focusing on nutrition education, food preparation and physical education.
On 19 April, Grade 3 and 4 learners took part in kitchen workshops led by a trained chef from Nestlé Professional. The learners were taught about different food groups and the benefits of eating healthy, planting a food garden and also the importance of food portion control. In addition, the learners participated in multiple sporting codes – including soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball, hoola hoop, skipping rope, and boot-camp exercises.

The Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme is designed for learners between the ages of 6 and 12 years and focuses on teaching children about the importance of good nutrition, drinking water, taking part in physical activity and leading a healthy lifestyle.
South Africa is reported to be currently experiencing a sharp increase in the numbers of overweight and obese children and adolescents. This has led to an explosion of non-communicable diseases related to poor nutrition and sedentary lifestyles.
“Nestlé South Africa spokesperson, Monako Dibetle, said the Nestlé Healthy Kids Programme aims to teach as many school-going children as possible about the importance of eating well for a healthier body and mind and drinking water as often as possible to stay hydrated.
“Our partnership with the Department of Basic Education has ensured that we bring this fun programme to learners and assist them in developing good food choices from an early age. We also encourage children, through this programme, to take part in various physical activities and sports in order to lead a complete healthy lifestyle.”
