Enhanced road safety for Paardekraal Primary

The main aim of the project is to survey all 89 schools in Mogale City in order to identify the top 10 to 15 schools with the highest road safety risk to its learners.

When driving past Paardekraal Primary School, one can expect to see several new road signs as well as two freshly painted pedestrian crossings.

This is all thanks to the Botnar Child Road Safety Challenge, which is managed by the Global Road Safety Partnership. According to their website, www.fondationbotnar.org, it is estimated that more than 1,25 million people die as a result of road crashes each year with an additional 50 million seriously injured.

Road traffic injuries and deaths have a significant impact on individuals under the age of 18, who account for more than 186 000 road traffic deaths annually.

According to the South African Road Federation’s (Sarf) operations manager, Basil Jonsson, the foundation asked for bids to be submitted from organisations in six countries who, in their estimation, had very bad road safety records. These countries include Mexico, India, Vietnam, Rumania, Tunisia and South Africa.

A total of 57 bids were received, from which 12 organisations were shortlisted. Three organisations were chosen from Mexico, two from India, three from Vietnam, two from Rumania, one from Tunisia and one from South Africa.

This team concluded their visit to Paardekraal Primary School by having Danny Cat, the road safety mascot, teach the learners more about being safe on the road.
