Bekker’s win in Jacaranda competition a way to put school on the map

Bekker was recently crowned the victor of the Jacaranda FM #myschoolrocks competition after putting in their all and proving that there is a lot more than meets the eye to life at the agricultural school.

After thoroughly impressing Martin Bester and his team during an interesting day of farm life on the school’s grounds, Hoërskool Bekker High beat out Hoërskool Waterkloof, Kempton Park, Linden and St Andrew’s School for Girls for the title of the top school that rocks.

The school scored an impressive A++ for their effort, with an interesting balloon and tractor ride and one of the most delicious cups of ‘moerkoffie’ with condensed milk the team has ever tasted, adding in an A+ for great food and service at the tuck shop, and an A for learners’ participation during the day.

“It’s an excellent initiative that gives a platform to schools that very few people know about,” said principal Adolf Ellis about the competition, adding that “Bekker is the only functional agricultural school in Gauteng.”

The stress was high among the learners and staff in the school as they waited beside the radio at just past 6am on Monday, 11 February. Jacaranda FM was broadcast over the assembly block where the entire school was gathered. When Martin announced the winning school, Bekker learners and staff burst out in a celebratory frenzy.

Martin said the competition was honestly so close that any school could have won, but it seems that it was just that perfect combination of everything the school did that edged them forward.

“They just made so much effort to show us their school, their spirit and their hospitality. They were just so serious about winning!” he added.

The school won R100 000 for a massive party which will be held on their grounds, and so far they hope to have Francois van Coke and Martin Bester’s band perform as well. They are also planning on visiting Hoërskool Driehoek soon to invite them to this party, hoping to bring a few hundred of their learners along to Bekker’s grounds.

They will also receive R100 000 worth of on-air advertising time which Jacaranda will assist them with all the way.
