Concerned road users recently contacted the News to report a steel beam that was dangerously close to breaking off an overhead advertising sign and falling onto the road below.
The sign in question is a large billboard fixed to the railway bridge over Frederick Cooper Road, which connects Chamdor Road to Voortrekker Road on the other side of the bridge, near the infamous ‘weekend robot’ intersection. This is a highly congested road, which almost never has no traffic driving along it or waiting at the traffic lights. The steel beam is quite large and weighty, and the concern is that it might come down and damage cars below.

The News contacted the company currently advertising on the billboard, Cosmopolitan Projects (for the Royal Cradle West Rand housing project). Quick work was done, and the company responsible for the billboard was contacted.
Within a few hours, workers were sent out to assess the problem. The steel beam was temporarily secured with a piece of rope, which seems to be holding well.

It is extremely difficult for workers to work on the sign because of the heavy traffic flow on the road. Some planning will be needed, and a suitable time must be chosen to permanently fix the problem.
This said, the SKP Media and Communications advertising company noted that they plan to fix the sign very soon, and will probably re-weld the steel. It is also suspected that a truck or other large vehicle might have clipped the sign while passing by, given the way the sign has been bent at certain points.
Workers will check on the sign daily to make sure it is still safe until the work can be completed.
The News will supply an update on this story as soon as possible.
