Baby born on sidewalk at Valley View

A local medical centre helped a mom to deliver her baby on the sidewalk at Valley View Retail Centre.

A normal Friday turned out to be the start of a new life at the Valley View Retail Centre on 21 June.

The team from HEALth-WorX medical centre at Valley View said they were all at work when someone phoned them to tell them a woman was in labour on the sidewalk.

The sister on duty and one of the receptionists rushed down with a wheelchair and the necessary equipment to assist the woman.

When they reached her however, the baby had already been born, but when the sister checked him, the baby boy was not breathing.

They had to work quickly and the sister asked the mother to assist her in resuscitating the baby, and after a while the infant gasped for air.

All this happened while the woman’s colleagues took off their jackets and made a makeshift wall to protect the woman and the baby.

The two women then took the mother and baby to the medical centre’s casualty unit where two doctors were waiting to see them. In the mean time, an ambulance had been called and someone from Sector 7’s Community Policing Forum had arrived to assist.

While waiting for the ambulance, they cleaned the baby up, and tried to make the mom comfortable. Once the ambulance arrived, mother and baby were taken to Leratong Hospital, where both are believed to be happy and healthy.

The News would like to get in touch with the mother – if anybody knows who she is, they can contact News journalist Natasha Pretorius on 083 468 2653.
