Let the games begin!
Every third Friday, people from all over come together to meet new people and have some fun. A bunch of board games are set up in a hall and the games start.
Family time is a time for fun and love. Bonding comes in many shapes and sizes, but none more iconic than board-game night. Sitting down with your children, parents or friends, nothing gets the spirit going and the group bursting into laughter like board-gaming.
Meeple Games hosts regular, large scale, gaming nights which are open to the public. Here, many children, teenagers and grownups get together to spend a few hours on Friday nights trying out all kinds of new and fascinating games.
“A meeple is a small playable character on a board which represents you,” Erik Dreyer, games master and organiser of the game night explained.

Every third Friday, quite a lot of people come together in Tarlton or Magaliesburg to meet new people and have some fun. The way the events are set up, people receive a kind of bingo card with pictures of different board games in every block. They have to move around the room and play the different games to try and fill up their bingo card first. The winner takes home one of the bigger, more expensive games. There are also smaller competitions through the night where players can win smaller games.
“We also have one big tournament at every event. People play in teams of, usually, four to six. Tonight we’re playing Pictionary, and the winner will receive a game valued at between R300 and more than R1 000.”
Kids and early teens were the first to arrive, but the adults soon filed into the room and the smaller games started. To make sure they play all the games needed to win the bingo game, people had to move around and join up with different groups to play, thus getting to know new people.
Games of all kinds, ranging from role-playing, strategy, speed/ dexterity and family games to story, filler and card games, there was something for each kind of player. Board games you might be used to seeing in shops lined the walls, along with some unfamiliar names which have been imported from overseas.
