A cleaner Krugersdorp – one dustbin at a time
Boltonia has found a new solution to the town's litter problem by having companies, residents and councillors work together to resolve the issue themselves.
Littered streets have become a constant throughout Krugersdorp, and generally, people tend to get used to a problem after it’s been present for some time. But this isn’t the case when it comes to the town’s trash problem. In fact, it seems as though residents grow more concerned every time they drive through town or into their neighbourhoods.
Boltonia residents decided that enough was enough and approached ward councillor, Whitey Moleba, to find a solution. The corner of Mill and Aster Street was, in particular, a sore spot to look at.

“People working in the factories and others waiting on the corner for work the whole day threw their trash on the ground, because there were no dustbins,” Whitey explained.
The Superfecta Foods factory was already doing its part by making sure that its premises were kept clean. But, when Whitey approached Superfecta’s management, and they took a stroll outside, they noticed that the sidewalks adjacent to the factory were more littered than they had realised.
Short work was made of the issue and a collaboration between businesses and councillors was formed to combat the problem. For a start, the factory donated two concrete dustbins which were placed in strategic spots at the problematic intersection. Within a short couple of weeks, the ground litter was nearly completely cleared up.
“We asked our workers to use the bins and keep the area clean, and to pick up any trash they see on the ground,” noted Superfecta’s manager, Paul da Silva. Whitey also asked that the residents do the same. This new mindset seems to have brought about a completely new culture in the factory and among the residents as they have become more mindful of cleaning up behind themselves.
Mogale City Municipality has also done its part by ensuring that the new dustbins are cleaned on a regular basis.
