#WeRead – Reading is a gift that keeps on giving

Reading surely is the gift that keeps on giving and the Cradle knows it all too well.

During the month of August, the News ran a book drive to raise much-needed awareness around National Book Week (2–6 September).

Numerous schools in the area were approached and the feedback and donations of second-hand books were overwhelming, so much so that three organisations benefited from the book drive.

One such organisation, The Cradle of Hope, a home for abused women with children, left the News’ offices with a Toyota Avanza filled with books.

The News team recently handed over the books to Elmarie Hall, the newly appointed marketing and public relations officer at the Cradle. She enthusiastically accepted them, saying how much the home and its residents will cherish this donation.

“Our residents get bored easily, but picking up a book will expand their knowledge and also help expand their minds to think outside of their situations,” Elmarie said.

She also mentioned that they get a lot of donations, especially books and it helps to filter out the old books which they then use in book auctions to help in their fundraisers.

“Fresh new reading material also helps to create another funding opportunity for us.”

The other organisations to benefit from the book drive are the Golden Age Village and Millennium Primary.
