EPR officer tragically killed during Sunday night robbery

The night before his birthday, while on duty, Dion de Villiers was senselessly killed by five suspects.

On the day that should have been a milestone celebration for the De Villiers family, they will be mourning the loss of a father, husband and friend instead.

Dion de Villiers would have celebrated his 60th birthday today (Monday, 7 October) but was sadly killed while responding to a robbery on Sunday night.

Dion was a reaction officer at EPR Security. At about 6.57pm, he was stationed in a side street off Albertina Sisulu Road in Luipaardsvlei, where one of the security company’s clients was about to close for the night. According to Johan Krogh, the General Manager, five suspects suddenly appeared.

He said that the suspects robbed their client and then approached the EPR vehicle that Dion was stationed in. They fired a minimum of four shots into the vehicle and Dion was fatally wounded.

“With his last breath, Dion managed to call for assistance on the two-way radio, but when other EPR vehicles and members arrived on scene, he had already passed away,” Krogh said.

He added that EPR wants to thank ER24 and the members from Sector 4 and Sector 9 of the Community Policing Forum who helped out at the scene.

In a Facebook message, Krogh said that on behalf of EPR’s management and colleagues, they would like to express their deepest sympathy and condolences to the family, whom they are keeping in their prayers.

Dion had worked for EPR on and off for about 10 years – the last six years being uninterrupted.

The EPR Facebook post said that Dion will be remembered by his EPR family as a loyal, friendly and soft-spoken man who gave his whole life to selflessly protect others. His loss will be felt by all.

The end of the post stated, “Rest in Peace, We Salute You!”

The staff of the News wants to extend their condolences to his family and everyone who knew him.
