The Magaliesburg Visible Policing commander, Captain Odette van Staden recently led a rural safety operation in Magaliesburg, that led to the arrest of nine people.
The operation started at 5.30am on Wednesday, 16 October and members from Rural Safety in the West Rand District visited farms and were looking for illegal immigrants.
They arrested eight people for being undocumented and one person for selling liquor without a licence.

While the operations took place, the police used the opportunity to speak to farmers, farm workers and residents within the rural communities, reminding them never to turn a blind eye on suspicious activities on their farms.
Those living in rural areas are considered soft target by criminals, due to the remoteness of farms, explained Constable Rebecca Phiti, from the Magaliesburg Police in a statement.
“The police’s objective is to improve safety and security within the entire rural environment in Magaliesburg, improve relations between the police and farmers, and educate the community on safety and security measures,” Phiti added in the statement.
The statement also indicated that the Magaliesburg Police station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joyce Julla, had said that the rural safety initiative will create a safe and secure rural environment where all inhabitants can prosper and live without fear. She also said the police will reduce crime levels in rural communities, increase police visibility and improve police response time, especially in cases of violent crimes.
They also said that more operations like this one will be conducted in and around Magaliesburg.
