We all know not to count our chickens before they hatch, but what about not counting your stolen chickens before the police figures out it was you?
The Hekpoort Police arrested two men on 18 October at about 2am, after they were found to be in possession of a number of stolen chickens.

“The arrest came after members of Oostermoed Security notified the police about a suspicious vehicle that was loading crates full of chickens at night from a truck,” said a statement sent by Hekpoort Police’s spokesperson, Gloria Maswanganye.
When police followed up on the information, they found the vehicle driving towards Krugersdorp. As if all of this was not suspicious enough, when the driver saw the police vehicle, he tried to speed away.
Police and security gave chase however, and managed to stop them on the N14. The white Opel Corsa light delivery vehicle was then searched and 34 crates filled with 340 slaughtered chickens were found in the vehicle.
“The suspects claimed that they bought the chickens, but failed to produce proof of purchase to the police,” the statement explained.
After interviewing the two men, it was found that the truck drivers illegally sell the chickens from their trucks without their companies knowing about it.
The two men, aged 27 and 34, were both arrested for possession of stolen property. A truck driver was also arrested later in the day in relation to the theft of the chickens.
“The acting station commander of Hekpoort Police, Warrant Officer Frederick Botma, commended the members for their quick response and swift action in arresting the perpetrators. He also applauded the security company for its vigilance and for refusing to take a bribe from the suspects,” ended the statement.
