Magalies woman sentenced for perjury

A woman who had lied to the Magaliesburg Police was recently convicted and sentenced for perjury.

The Magaliesburg Police issued a stern warning to anyone who considers committing perjury.

“The community tend to lose hope when we tell them that we do not want to arrest perpetrators of crimes, because sometimes we are misled by the complainants themselves,” explained Constable Rebecca Phithi from the Magaliesburg Police’s Corporate Communications section in a statement.

She said that they have had a number of cases where the complainants lied about incidents – either with the intention to make a claim to an insurance company or to protect others.

She explained that a few months ago a woman was arrested for perjury by members of their Detective Unit. An investigation later revealed that the woman was indeed lying and she had to face trial in the Magaliesburg Periodical Magistrates’ Court.

After being found guilty, she was fined R3 000 or three months’ direct imprisonment.

Magaliesburg Police station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Joyce Julla, welcomed the sentence, and said that it serves as a warning to others who are planning to do the same.

“Those found doing it will be arrested without mercy and they will face the consequences.” said Julla.
