Young woman caught with live ammunition

Instead of finding a stolen cellphone, two police members found ammunition in a 18-year-old girl's bag.

A recent search for a stolen cellphone has led to the arrest of an 18-year-old girl, who was in possession of live ammunition.

According to a statement from Constable Rebecca Phiti from the Magaliesburg Police’s communications department, two police members responded to a call about a stolen cellphone at about 2pm on Monday, 11 November.

When Constables Sam Nhlapo and Peter Kekae responded to the complaint at the Ga Mogale location, they decided to search one of the houses in the location for the cellphone.

They became suspicious of one of the women who lives in the house and asked to search her bag. She initially refused but later handed her bag over to be searched. While looking for the cellphone, they found several rounds of live ammunition in the 18-year-old’s bag.

When they asked whether she owned a firearm, which would entitle her to own the ammunition, she said she did not possess a firearm.

The two police members then arrested the woman for possession of live ammunition. She will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court soon.

“As the police we need to make sure that the community is safe, by making sure that anything that is dangerous to any citizen of this country is removed from the hands of its possessor. We focus on things like live ammunition as it could claim a lot of innocent lives in our communities,” Phiti said in the statement.
