In a statement sent by Constable Lucky Matome from the Tarlton Police’s Corporate Communications, the police said that Krugersdorp is one of the areas on the West Rand with a worrisome number of vehicles being stolen every day.

At 10am on Thursday, 5 December, West Rand District Police members arrested three men aged 29, 39 and 42 at the McDonald’s after finding tools used for breaking into and stealing cars in the vehicle they were driving.

“These arrests serve as a warning to car thieves and criminals that our pro-active police officers are on the ground hunting them,” the statement read.

It went on to explain that car-jamming is an escalating safety concern and that a large number of thefts out of motor vehicles and car or truck hijackings can be attributed to the use of signal-jamming devices.

The police have release these eight steps to prevent the community from falling victim to vehicle remote jamming:

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times and take note of suspicious people or suspicious activity in and around the parking area

• Report suspicious activity to centre management or the security at the mall (have the police emergency numbers on hand)

• Do not leave valuable items in an unattended vehicle

• Do not leave any items in full view in your vehicle

• Never press the remote to lock your vehicle while walking away, always lock your vehicle whilst standing next to it

• Check that the vehicle is locked by testing the doors before walking away. If you have young kids, turn it into a game. Let the kids take turns to check the doors. Later on they will start to remind you

• Ensure that the boot is locked

• Prioritise your safety and that of your property at all times

“The irony of it all is that areas that are inundated with informal car guards or parking assistants, experience the most number of car break-ins and car theft,” the statement said.

According to the police, high visibility and operations such as O Kae Molao have largely been responsible for reducing the number of these kinds of incidents.

“Community participation is of paramount importance, as fighting crime needs to be done by all of us,” the statement read.

The West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, also assured members of the community of their safety and promised to root out crime in the district.
