Two robbers thought they got away with their crime, but a vigilant sergeant and help from the victim led the detectives right to the robbers’ doorstep.
In a statement, Constable Slindile Ntuli of Muldersdrift Police corporate communications said the incident occurred on 21 January at Plot 78, Driefontein at about 10pm.
A 61-year-old man was woken up at 10pm by the sound of his bedroom door opening.

“He saw his daughter entering his bedroom with two intruders. One of them held a knife against her throat and the other one had a rifle in his possession,” Ntuli’s statement read.
The thugs tied up the man, his wife and his daughter and also demanded money from them. The man gave the robbers an undisclosed amount of cash, and before fleeing the scene they also took electronic equipment and jewellery.
“The robbers thought they were off the hook,” the statement said.
That was until Sergeant Nkuna from the Muldersdrift Police received a call from the victim, who told the sergeant he had traced one of their stolen cellphones to Kagiso.
Nkuna and detective Constable Bambiso went to the location on 26 January and found a 19-year-old man there.
The young man gave the police permission to search his room, and that is where the officers found electronic appliances and a cellphone under the bed.
When Nkuna asked the man about the items found in his possession, he confessed that he and his friends had stolen them from Plot 78 in Driefontein.
The man was arrested and the victim identified his belongings that were found in the suspect’s house.
The young man will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court.
“Lieutenant Colonel Mankontsho Setlhare applauded the members for their quick reaction to apprehend the suspect,” the statement concluded.
