Woman tries to assault police officer

Police arrested a 19-year-old woman who attempted to attack a police officer while they were trying to do their job.

Local police recently arrested a 19-year-old woman after she tried to assault a police officer with a blunt object.

At about 6pm on 18 January, police escorted the young woman’s mother to where she was in Extension 13 to help her look for her child. She and her mother then proceeded to insult the police before the young woman attempted to assault the officer. Police overpowered the woman and placed her under arrest.

Captain Solomon Sibiya, spokesperson for the Kagiso Police, released a statement in which he said it has become a common and worrying factor that people are not only obstructing police from doing their duties, but are also attacking officers.

“The police has a constitutional mandate and responsibility to protect everyone in the country, regardless of their nationality or status,” Sibiya said. “It is therefore disturbing that the public deny and sometimes even attack the same police officers who put their lives on the line to protect them.

“It is the same public that is quick to criticise police for not protecting them and their property.”

Sibiya said that this was the second incident of its kind that day.

Kagiso Police station commander, Brigadier Themba Maduna vowed to deal harshly and decisively with anyone who interferes with police and prohibits them from doing their duties.

“We will not tolerate members of the public who intentionally disregard the law and go as far as attacking the police. We will deal with them accordingly as their actions constitute a direct attack on the State,” Maduna warned.

The woman was charged with attacking a police officer and interference, and appeared in the Kagiso Magistrates’ Court on 27 January.
