A massive construction project is currently under way on Wentworth Street which connects to the high-traffic Albertina Sisulu Road.
Earthmoving equipment is being used to dig up the road and workers are laying a new and larger water pipe underneath the 300 metre stretch of road.
While waiting for a response from the provincial department which oversees the project, Ward 37 councillor Christo Kotzé informed the News that he had received an update on the project on Tuesday, 24 November, namely that the contractor has scheduled blasting in the area for tomorrow, 25 November.
Uncertain of how many of the area’s residents he would reach on his own, Kotzé approached the local newspaper to put out a notice to the community.
A general enquiry was made to the contractor, Delmon Mining and Civils on 13 November.

But, after confirming receipt of the request and noting that he would contact whichever provincial department was overseeing the project, the News has been unable to reach Kabelo Tau from Delmon. Kotzé claimed on 24 November that he has also been unable to reach Tau for more information.
The notice that Kotzé received from Tau read: “The Delmon and Inyathi JV wishes to inform you that blasting work under Contract Number RW0011368/17: Construction of the F49 pipeline is expected to start on Wednesday, 25 November 2020 from 1pm to 3pm, and on Thursday, 26 November from 11am to 11.30pm. The work is going to be done between Telkom yard and behind Trolley World. Delmon and Inyathi JV in conjunction with Rand Water apologises for any inconveniences and would like to thank you for your cooperation with regards to this matter.”
Kotzé sent out the following message to the public: “By now you are aware of the huge construction works regarding a new water pipeline taking place in Wentworth Street, Wentworth Park to improve the old infrastructure. Tomorrow, Wednesday 25 November and Thursday 26 November blasting is going to take place on site. Please share this info with your friends staying close to the site and are not part of the information groups.”
