News journalist excels at national awards
Jaco Human, one of the Krugersdorp News journalists recently excelled at the national Forum for Community journalists awards. Being nominated as a finalist in three categories.
Anyone who has met Jaco Human knows that he likes to look at things from a different perspective. This is not only apparent in the way he writes, but also in the way he captures images with his camera.
This different way of thinking recently paid off when Jaco was named a finalist in the national 2019 Forum for Community Journalists (FCJ) awards.
The FCJ is an independent, voluntary non-profit company that strives to promote the interests of all journalists employed on a permanent or freelance basis at community newspapers, magazines and online community publications.
Jaco was a finalist in the General Photo of the Year category with his photo titled Die roos vertrap. He took it just as the final whistle of the 2019 Rugby World Cup final blew, with the Springboks coming out victorious against England.

Another category in which Jaco was a finalist was News Photo of the Year. Here Jaco’s photo titled Extinguishing the flames was taken during training for emergency workers. Hardworking firefighters were extinguishing the flames on a burning car.

Lastly Jaco’s writing style ensured him a finalist spot for Sport Writing Journalist of the Year. His stories covered not only health and fitness, but also more emotional issues like the story of Leilani Kuter who walked 27km every day for 27 days to raise awareness for survivors of abuse after she herself was raped 27 years ago; and of Simon Makgobela, a disabled cyclist whose dream is to be the best cyclist and provide for his family.
Jaco said the secret to a good photo is taking 600 photos to get that perfect one.
