Claims about municipality’s Eskom debt unfounded

Eskom responded to rumours surrounding Mogale City Local Municipality's current debt to the entity.

The News recently received an anonymous tip-off that the Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) allegedly was in arrears of hundreds of thousands of rand, which relates to a few months’ delinquency.

The News can now confirm that this rumour is untrue.

Eskom responded to the enquiry, stating that, “This accusation is not valid because the municipality is honouring their agreement that Eskom has with them”.

Eskom noted that the MCLM is, as of the writing of this article, “… in arrears for an amount of R280 499 166. Current account of R64 million was paid in full.” As for the agreement that the MCLM has with Eskom, “The municipality provided us with the payment arrangement and Council Resolution documents have been drafted and sent to the municipal manager for his signature”.

Lucky Sele, The MCLM mayoral spokesperson noted that, “Like all other Municipalities in the country, Mogale City owes Eskom. The Municipality has honoured the payment arrangement with Eskom and has never defaulted.

Council authorised the accounting officer to enter into a payment plan with Eskom to pay off the old debt of R219 052 518.64 from 30 to 120 days, over 10 months’ period while servicing the current debt on monthly basis in time. R61 million that was due on the fourth of March 2021 was duly paid on time”.
