Beautiful woman with a charitable heart
The 31-year-old Thammy Young from Rant-en-Dal is looking to leave her mark on the world by becoming the next Mrs South Africa.
Nearly a month before Mrs South Africa 2020/ 2021 had been crowned on 18 March, the search for the next Mrs South Africa was on. Our very own beauty queen Thammy Young is currently in the running for the Mrs SA crown in 2022 as a semi-finalist, and she’s bringing a lot of experience to the table.
She entered the pageantry world in 2004 when she was a high school learner. She placed in the Top 5 for the Miss Ubuntu pageant and was named Miss Personality. While at university in 2009 she placed in the Top 5 in the Miss Nelson Mandela University pageant, she was in the Top 3 for the Miss Varsity Cup competition, and she wore the crown in the Miss Nelson Mandela University Student Resident pageant.
Since then Thammy has been focusing on her career as an industrial engineer, and on her personal life.
As a mother of two boys, a big sister to teenage boys and a daughter who grew up in a home that was patriarchal and abusive, I’ve realised just how important grooming men from a young age is.
“Through the Mrs South Africa platform I would like to bring awareness to mothers and the community that it is up to us to teach men from as early as possible how to treat women, to end the scourge of gender-based violence in our society,” she explained.
Thammy headed her company’s social initiative programme for a few years. Though it is something most businesses have to do, Thammy took it on like a duck takes to water, finding that she had an unexpected love for charity. Through this corporate programme they assisted disadvantaged children with school uniforms and the like, and she gave multiple motivational talks.
Currently she’s working alongside The President’s Award South Africa programme to help high school and tertiary learners develop certain skills to prepare them for the world of employment. “The programme brings together practical experiences and life skills, building confidence, encouraging physical health and recreation, and motivating young people to engage with their communities. I’m more focused on the ‘Save a Boy Child’ initiative which aims at grooming young boys into respectable and responsible men in their communities.”
The next Mrs South Africa is scheduled to be announced in November 2021. “I was definitely overwhelmed at first as this is a big responsibility. I have so much to share and so much I want to do with the platform I’ve been given.
My boys definitely motivate me not just to be a better mom but to be a better person. Through them I can see endless possibilities for touching other young boys’ lives. Teaching men to be strong but also gentle in their homes and the community is extremely important. And I believe women in our society hold more than enough power to bring about this powerful shift in the mindset of our young boys,” Thammy said.
