Uplifting the community even against the odds

The third management change in as many years but Hendrik says they want to focus on uplifting their people.

The shelter on the corner of Kobie Krige and Joubert Streets have seen many management changes but one thing remains constant, and that is the need the residents of the home have.

Recently renamed, the Grace House Upliftment Centre is now being run by two of the residents, Lizette and Hendrik van Rooyen. Although there is still no electricity the residents are working together to provide a better life for everyone at the centre.

Hendrik told the News they did not want to use the word ‘shelter’ anymore, as it had a bad connotation.

They have joined hands with other organisations such as Mercy House, and the residents can now attend short courses at Mercy House on a weekly basis.

Hendrik said they wish to focus on the man in the family, or the person who is the breadwinner.

“Many of the dads who come here are in a bad place, and we try to help them. Firstly we want to help them fix their relationship with God.”

Like any other shelter they completely rely on donations, and Hendrik appealed to the public to please donate to their centre. He invited the residents of Krugersdorp to go to the centre, talk to the residents and even take a walk through the shelter.

“This is my and my wife’s calling,” Hendrik added.

If you would like to find out more about the shelter or donate, phone Lizette on 074 307 3302 or Hendrik on 061 355 6101.
