Orient Hills community turns violent during service delivery meeting

When stakeholders tried to meet with the Orient Hills community recently to help resolve their issues, the community turned violent.

Following recent unrest at Orient Hills in Magaliesburg, a meeting was held with the community members. Unfortunately, it quickly turned violent.

In a statement from Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere from the Magaliesburg Police’s corporate communications he explained what happened.

At 4.30pm on Monday, 3 May, the West Rand District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana; the Magaliesburg Police station commander, Lieutenant Colonel Vuma; the Mogale City Executive Mayor, Francis Makgatho; senior West Rand District Police management; and Eskom and Transnet representative visited the Orient Hills community to address the community’s issues.

Mogwere said the community had been protesting about service delivery since 15 April, and in the process blocked the R24, demanding electricity.

During the meeting some of the Orient Hills community members did not want to cooperate and threw stones at the police and others in attendance.

The police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse them. No injuries have been reported yet.”

Unfortunately the road is still closed and motorists are advised to use alternative routes to Magaliesburg and Rustenburg.

Mogwere said the police were monitoring the situation, and that Kekana condemned the behaviour of the community as they should address their concerns in an appropriate manner.
