Police visit school: Teenage pregnancy, substance abuse among the topics discussed

The Magaliesburg Police recently visited learners from a local school to motivate them to be responsible members of the community.

Learners from Mphe-Thuto Primary School were treated to a motivational talk from the police recently.

Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere from the Magaliesburg Police corporate communications explained that the Social Crime Prevention and Communications officers visited the school at 08:00 on Monday, September 20.

“The purpose of the motivational talk was to reach out to learners through words of encouragement and to motivate them to focus on their education, and respect their teachers and other learners, so that every learner could have a feeling of belonging and enjoy both the social and academic aspects of a school environment.”

He said the teams not only focused on the aspects that concerned the learners but also things that remained a concern in society like bullying, teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, substance abuse and peer pressure.

The topic of bullying was highlighted, and learners were made aware of the impact it has on other learners’ self-esteem. In promoting the spirit of Ubuntu, learners were further addressed about the values and norms that they should promote in their lives such as good manners, listening to teachers and maintaining a good behaviour, so that they could live a good life and be a good example in a society.”
