Leratong assists 54 patients with cataract surgery

A total of 54 patients recently received much-needed cataract surgery at Leratong Hospital during their cataract camp.

More than 50 less fortunate patients recently underwent cataract surgery at Leratong Hospital.

Hospital communications officer Fikile Oyekanmi explained that 54 patients underwent the surgery when they held their cataract camp between November 13 and 14.

The cataract camp project is run by the hospital’s Ophthalmology Department in partnership with the Islamic Medical Association. The project was initiated in Gauteng in 2005 and has been rolled out to different health facilities.

The purpose is to assist people from under-privileged communities who cannot afford to undergo cataract surgery.”

The head of the Ophthalmology Department at Leratong Hospital, doctor Shabbir Hussain said the greatest satisfaction he got from this project was to see how the patients’ independence was restored.

“When you can see, you can do a lot for yourself,” said Dr Hussain.

Since the inception of the project 7 400 cataract surgeries had been done.
