Get the husky to the Netherlands

After years of looking for her dream dog, Mindie van den Heever now needs to raise funds to take her beloved Husky with her to the Netherlands.

Man’s best friend can change your life, bring endless happiness and even teach you a lot about life itself. A loving dog can and often does mean the world to kids and can become an integral part of growing up.

Twelve-year-old Mindie van den Heever and her family have been looking for their dream dog for years. As fate would have it, a playful silver-haired Husky pup with differently coloured eyes named Luca was born just before Mindie’s birthday in July, and the two have spent every day since playing together outside.

Recently, Mindie’s dad was given the opportunity of a lifetime; one that they simply could not pass up, and accepted a position at a major company in the Netherlands.

Mindie has accepted that she’d have to leave her other pets, such as her pet rats, cats and bunnies behind, but she can’t stand the idea of letting go of Luca now that she’s finally found him.

Mindie and her parents came to an agreement that if she worked hard, did all she could and raised the money, they could take Luca with them to Utrecht. But, Mindie explained, it’ll cost them about R44 000.

Mindie started making brightly coloured, triangular shaped fabric chickens of different sizes that can be used for door stoppers or the like, and selling them online and at markets.

Her dad told her that whatever she could raise, he’ll match. In the end, this massive task that sits in front of the Grade 6 Kennies learner is more an opportunity to learn a couple of invaluable life lessons that few children ever get the opportunity to learn.

Having already sold a few thousands worth, Mindie is reaching out and asking the community to buy these colourful chickens or to help in any other way possible to help her get her beloved and playful Luca to the Netherlands by the time they’re set to leave in the first week of February.
