WARNING: Avoid long-weekend bridge underpass in heavy rains

Another car became stuck this morning in the flooded underpass on Frederick Cooper Road.

After heavy rains during Wednesday morning, January 19 the notorious underpass below the train bridge on Frederick Cooper Road (the extension of Chamdor Road towards Voortrekker Road) was flooded yet again.

The flooded underpass can seem deceptively safe, and the News witnessed various bakkies, SUVs and trucks navigating the accumulated water. This could prompt other drivers to take a chance; however they are advised not to risk it.

While the News was at the scene of the flooding, a BMW sedan drove into the deep water and got stuck for reasons unknown.

Readers will recall that a Mercedes-Benz became stuck in a similar fashion in the underpass after the rainfall of November 29 and 30.

The alternative route via Barrat and Albertina Sisulu Roads is only a five-minute detour to get to the other side of the bridge. The alternative route of Voortrekker and Main Reef Roads is a less than ten-minute detour.

The News reported in November last year about Gerhard Nieuwoudt, Mogale City’s Emergency Service’s Regional station commander warning road users to be careful especially in areas where they know flooding could occur.
