Former matrics dealing with disappointment: Help is available
Leratong Hospital encourages former matric learners who are disappointed with their results to get help, and to remember it is not the end of the road.
With the ink on the matric statements of results barely dry the Leratong Hospital would like young people to know that while some are coping with disappointment, not asking for help is a mistake.
“With many excited to have received good matric results, for those who have not done well, this period can be mental torture that comes with negative emotions – feelings of shame, disappointment, and humiliation – particularly since the results have been published in the media,” said Luyanda Naholo from the Leratong Hospital communication department.
Support from family and loves ones is absolutely imperative to deal with disappointment, she added.
Failing a year does not mean you are failing in life or as a person. It is important to be realistic about your contribution to not succeeding, and aim to improve. Failing doesn’t mean giving up, you can try again. Look back in terms of where the mistakes were made. Introspection is essential,” said Leratong Hospital’s psychologists.
Parents can support their children by encouraging them to try again, and reminding them it is okay to do so. Encourage youngsters to share their feelings, and make an effort to understand those feelings. The professionals also recommend exercise and seeking professional help.
Naholo said it is important for the youngster who has failed to fill other roles as well, like that of a daughter, a son or a sibling.
“Don’t define yourself as a failure; something can be done.”
She added that suicidal thoughts are common when dealing with anxiety and disappointment, and much like other mental-health conditions they can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background.
Help is available,” she reiterated.
