LETTER: ‘Reconsider before you quit’
Today, As I look back over my life, I realise that quitting would have been a mistake – Pastor Mes
• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:
I quit.
Two very powerful words either spoken or thought by all of us at some time or another. It can be said in the context of a failing marriage, a work challenge, or just pure frustration. The problem with quitting is, the more often you do it, the easier it becomes. “I quit” can also be applied in our faith issues. Frustration, disappointment or confusion can lead people of faith to question their beliefs and even quit religion completely.
But quitting is seldom a solution for your situation. Jesus, from birth, faced persecution and throughout his short life he was tormented by his enemies. At the lowest point in his life, he cried out these words, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me”. Imagine reaching that point in your life.
Many people today can identify with his desperation. “I quit” is as normal as breathing. It is a reaction to an unpleasant set of circumstances. Before you quit your marriage, your job or a situation that is drowning you, STOP!
Take a breath, take a moment, say a prayer, call a friend. Count all the things you would have missed in life if you had quitted in similar circumstances before.
Like you, I have at times considered quitting. Battles I didn’t want to face. Battles I didn’t think I could conquer. But I didn’t quit.
Today, as I look back over my life, I realise that quitting would have been a mistake. Most great athletes have considered quitting at some time. But because they persevered the pain was rewarded with glory. Stop! Don’t just quit. Pray.
