Motorists urged to honour drivers’ license renewal appointments

'The majority of the driver licence and traffic centres (DTLC) visited in Gauteng, such as in Kagiso, all face a common challenge of licence holders not showing up for confirmed appointment slots' – Gauteng Provincial Legislature.

The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Roads and Transport recently completed a round of oversight visits throughout the province, exploring efficiency levels at various driver’s licence renewal centres.

This followed the briefing by the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport on September 1 last year when they furnished the Committee with detailed plans to manage licence renewal backlogs in the province – after Minister Fikile Mbalula had granted an extension to March 31, 2022.

The majority of the driver licence and traffic centres (DTLC) they visited, such as in Kagiso, Xavier, Kliptown, Temba and Mabopane all face a common challenge of licence holders not showing up for confirmed appointment slots, which affects targets set by the Department and adds to the backlog.

While the committee was impressed with efficiency levels at some DTLCs, the committee was presented with evidence of motorists not turning up for their booked licence renewal appointments on the day and the under-booking of the centres.

Committee chairperson Gregory Schneemann said, “I appeal on citizens to honour their scheduled appointments and licence renewal slots in order for the March 31 deadline to be achieved,” he said.
