Cops, community strengthen bond in Magalies with gripping awareness campaign

Ordinary citizens, various organisations and law enforcement joined hands by conducting an awareness campaign to stop crime in all shapes and sizes in Magaliesburg.

With placards reading ‘Drug free school zone’, ‘Real men protect women and children’ and ‘Stop rape now’ the message is clear … ordinary citizens, various organisations and law enforcement are tired of crime in society, especially against women and children.

On Saturday, February 26, police together with its Youth Desk, the Victim Empowerment Centre, Gender-based Violence Brigades, faith-based organisations, security services and community members joined hands by conducting an awareness campaign from 11:30 to 15:00 in Magaliesburg.

According to Magaliesburg Police spokesperson Sergeant Kgomotso Mogwere, the campaign was graced by the presence of Magaliesburg Police station commander Lieutenant Colonel Mawewe Vuma, and pastor RM Ngobeni from the Worship Bible Church in Magaliesburg.

“It started with a prayer against crime at the Ubuntu Arts and Crafts Centre in the Ga-mogale location where community members were engaged and educated about crime. In addition, they were educated about the services rendered by the police station and how to access them. They were encouraged to use support structures and community-based victim-support initiatives and work with the police in the fight against crime.

A partnership between the police, other initiatives and the community was maintained and strengthened. All representatives demonstrated positive support.

“They further joined efforts in a motorcade and loud-hailing in the Magaliesburg CBD, Ga-mogale location and Ga-mogale informal settlement where posters with an appealing message to stop crime such as GBV, substance abuse, domestic violence, theft, rape, assault, housebreaking, business robbery, business burglary, fraud, human trafficking, missing persons and children abuse were displayed.”

Pamphlets with information about crime and safety tips were also distributed.

Lieutenant Colonel Vuma expressed his gratitude and thanked the community for participating in the awareness campaign.

This is the kind of partnership we need; the police alone cannot win the fight against crime. Break the silence and report crime at Magaliesburg Police on 014 577 5137 or the Crime Stop number 08600 10111.”
