There are plenty passionate writers in Krugersdorp

The workshop, which is held annually, is aimed at ensuring that the culture of reading and writing becomes central in the transformation and upliftment of communities.

The Mogale City Library Services still works hard to preserve literature and promote the love of reading to young and old.

For readers to have more to read, writers need to live out their dreams on the pages. To encourage more local aspiring writers to do just that, the library recently hosted a writing workshop with the Gauteng Provincial Libraries and Archives Department.

“The workshop held at the Krugersdorp Central Library attracted more than 40 aspirant writers and established publishers, coming from as far as the East Rand and Merafong,” explained senior librarian in Krugersdorp Dr Nthabiseng Raduvha.

“The workshop, which is held annually, is aimed at ensuring that the culture of reading and writing becomes central in the transformation and upliftment of communities. Guided by our ongoing work and working closely with communities in our constituency, our department realised that the standard of writing has not only dwindled but in some instances lacks competitiveness and creativity.

The workshops have therefore been identified as an intervention that in future will equip writers with skills, techniques and the know-how to produce sound reading material produced by informative knowledge.”

Nthabiseng added that she’s looking forward to hosting another local authors workshop in June where writers will be able to showcase their work.

“The discussions on topics ranging from writing skills, audience finding, finding a niche in writing and publishing among others were led by the Munsieville-based author and publisher, Phillip Ndlovu. Phillip also encouraged writers to form study groups to share information or storylines and ideas as a way of developing their skill and keeping them focused towards growth.

“The workshop also follows our Library Services’ recently unveiled free e-resources at the City’s libraries, allowing registered library users to access various resources including, books, journals and encyclopaedias online. This electronic resource material will make information needed for research, study or any purpose more accessible and easily usable for our library users, including our aspirant writers and publishers,” Nthabiseng concluded.

At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
