LETTER: Why we shouldn’t procrastinate

Because of the finality of death and the uncertainty of life, I believe it is wise to not procrastinate – local pastor.

• Pastor Gerrit Mes of the AFM Pentecostal Fellowship writes:

After an entire life, death is the full stop. It is the end. That is what the atheist and agnostic would say.

After a lifetime of being with families at the moment of someone’s final breath, I must admit I partly agree. It is so final. Many people, I don’t know if it is wishful thinking, honestly believe in life after death. It is a principle in every religion I know. Heaven, nirvana, utopia or hell awaits people after they have reached the full stop at the end of their lives.

Personally, I believe death is the end. The end of pain, suffering, tears and fear. Death ends all our opportunities to say “I am sorry”, “I love you” or “Please forgive me”.

Death is so final. But the worst thing about death is that often it arrives without warning. No final opportunity to say what should be said and fix what should be fixed.

Because of the finality of death and the uncertainty of life, I believe it is wise not to procrastinate.

Before you go to bed tonight, make right with God and your neighbours as far as possible. Then turn around and sleep.
