Festive fraudster on the prowl

The municipality warns of a scammer who threatens to cut residents' power if they do not pay him.

While most hard-working residents have taken a much-deserved break to spend time with loved ones, scammers are not taking any rest, harassing vulnerable residents and threatening to have their electricity supply cut.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) communications officer Adrian Amod thus warns the community about a current scam by a man using the number 060 883 2930.

He is targeting municipal customers making false threats to cut their electricity supply if no payment is made to them.

“Members of the public are therefore urged not to make payments to any individuals as the municipality uses official platforms with verifiable contact details for client communication such as municipal statements, our website and SMS messaging. As such, no payment arrangements, discussions, or even actual payment requests are made through individuals who threaten to cut services or promise to reduce any municipal debt,” Amod reassured the community.

He concluded that customers should avoid being scammed, further encouraging them to always verify the authenticity of individuals and companies who could pose as municipal service providers or any communication platforms.

To verify it, residents can contact the municipal switchboard on 011 951 2000, their WhatsApp line on 083 787 2814 or email customerservices@mogalecity.gov.za.
