Residents, businesses and landowners are being encouraged to have their say on a draft development plan that will help shape the future of Muldersdrift and Lanseria for years to come.

Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) has opened the Draft Muldersdrift-Lanseria Precinct Plan for public comment, inviting residents and stakeholders to review the proposed framework before it is adopted.

According to Mogale City’s head of Corporate Communications, Adrian Amod, the precinct plan is intended to guide future development in the area by identifying preferred land uses, key development opportunities and a framework for public and private investment.

“The precinct plan is a municipal policy instrument that will guide future development within the Muldersdrift-Lanseria Precinct by identifying development proposals, desired land use patterns, and a public-private investment framework,” said Amod.

The draft plan sets out a long-term vision for growth in the precinct while aiming to balance development with environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Muldersdrift is regarded as an important urban-rural transition zone, comprising high-income residential estates, informal settlements, commercial developments and agricultural holdings. Its location next to the rapidly expanding northern suburbs of the City of Johannesburg, including Cosmo City and Ruimsig, has placed increasing development pressure on the area.

The municipality says the plan seeks to provide a co-ordinated approach to future growth by improving land use planning, encouraging investment and supporting inclusive economic development.

It also acknowledges the area’s environmental significance, as it borders the Unesco-recognised Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site and the Magaliesberg Biosphere Reserve. The draft plan therefore aims to ensure that future development protects these environmentally sensitive areas.

The precinct plan was first announced by the municipality in 2024 as part of its long-term planning strategy. One of its key objectives is to unlock economic opportunities linked to Lanseria’s continued growth.

“Leveraging major economic development opportunities, especially in proximity to Lanseria, will help foster local employment and attract investment in the commercial, industrial and tourism sectors,” Amod said.

Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to submit comments on the draft plan before the closing date.

Copies of the Draft Muldersdrift-Lanseria Precinct Plan are available for public inspection during office hours until September 14 at the Department of Economic Services on the first floor of the Furn City Building.
