Crash rate rises after Beyers Naudé speed humps removed

Speed humps removed due to suspected vandalism have reportedly contributed to increased speeding and crashes along Beyers Naudé Drive.

Motorists are urged to drive cautiously on Beyers Naudé Drive in Muldersdrift amid ongoing upgrades and the removal of recently installed speed humps.

Councillor Shenan Cochrane said additional speed humps near Catbox/ Heritage View Road were removed due to suspected vandalism. She said speeding has increased since the humps were removed, contributing to an increase in crashes along the road.

On August 19, a crash caused traffic congestion, with contractors creating a temporary detour to allow traffic to flow. No serious injuries were reported.

Cochrane said there had previously been an average of one crash a week before the speed humps were installed. While the humps were in place, there was only one crash, which she said was due to a person allegedly messaging on their phone. Since the humps were recently removed due to suspected vandalism, the number of crashes has increased to two a week.

“Installation of permanent humps is imminent,” she concluded, urging motorists to drive cautiously, not exceed the speed limit and remember that the road remains a construction site.
