West Rand community to expect more wardens

Police on the West Rand have taken a big step to help fight crime and make the community safer by ordering the deployment of more wardens.

The West Rand District Police Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana led a briefing session on Thursday morning, May 4 to announce that they would be deploying more wardens to intensify the fight against crime in communities.

Police officers and station commanders were present at the briefing to hear the long-awaited announcement.

Department of Community Safety District Director Nanna Mulauzi said that at least 13 police stations in the district would deploy wardens who will then be in charge of roles such as crime prevention, traffic law enforcement, and administration support.

She further explained they will work 12-hour shifts a day and have rest days for their efforts. She lastly said that the new wardens have already started working and many more are in the process of completing their registration before they can be deployed in the field.

During the briefing, various stakeholders (who regularly work with the West Rand District Police) were also present to hear the good news. This included the Department of Community Safety, West Rand District Mayor councillor TM Bhovungana, Rand West City MMC for Safety councillor Nontombi Molathlegi, District Management, station commanders, Vispol commanders, Gauteng Traffic Police officials, the District Community Policing Forum Board as well as Community Policing Forum (CPF) executive members from 13 stations.

Kekana added that every police station had its challenges that will be addressed and all the newly appointed wardens must play their part at their respective police stations within the district.

He further acknowledged the good work and efforts that are being done to help in the fight against crime in communities and hopes the new wardens will make a difference in assisting the police and those who need help.
