Accused rapist ends up in hospital after beating from community

Members of the community recently took the law into their own hands when a woman accused someone she knew well of rape.

A 30-year-old man was assaulted by the community after he was accused of raping someone close to him.

Kagiso Police spokesperson Captain Solomon Sibiya said the man is from central Kagiso and is under police guard after he was severely assaulted by residents over the weekend.

At about 13:00 on Sunday, May 7 the victim and friends were allegedly walking down the street where the man lives when he called her. She went to him while he was standing at the gate. He then invited her into his home, then allegedly locked the door, and left her inside.

“A few minutes later the suspect returned and entered the house, locking the door once again. He then dragged the victim into his bedroom where he raped her. The victim later informed her family. The matter was reported to the Kagiso police who opened a case docket of rape and started to search for the suspect.”

Sibiya added that the community allegedly also launched their own search which led to the successful apprehension of the suspect.

“The suspect was attacked and severely assaulted with an assortment of objects. Police were called by an anonymous caller, but when they arrived they found the suspect lying on the ground and bleeding from injuries he sustained during the assault.”

After the suspect is discharged from hospital he will appear in court.

Acting Kagiso Police Station Commander Colonel Peter Mabuso condemned the vigilantism saying, “Let us refrain from taking law into our hands as that may lead to your arrest. Remember that the suspect has a right to lay a charge of assault against everyone who attacked him.”
