Police uncover secret drug lab worth millions in Magalies

Police arrested two suspects aged 72 and 37 who were caught with drugs worth R150 million in a lab.

The South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau with Crime Intelligence and the Special Task Force made a huge drug bust on Thursday, 11 May in a rural area in Magaliesburg.

The Hawks along with other law enforcement agencies were conducting a search and seizure following an investigation into the drug supply flowing in the Western Cape.

According to Colonel Philani Nkwsalase spokesperson for the Falcons Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, during the search police found drugs in the form of mandrax paste, and mandrax tablets. A mandrax press, buckets of methaqualone, and drums of powder were used to manufacture the mandrax.

The two suspects who were arrested were two men aged 72 and 37. They will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Courts where they will face charges of dealing drugs and contravening the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act of 140 of 1992.

The National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Lebeya (Advocate) praised the Western Cape Serious Organised Crime investigation team together with Crime Intelligence for their meticulous detective work.

The bag seized by police contained methaqualone.
