Lightning sparks veld fires in Kromdraai
Homes are still standing as well as livestock and even lives were saved as a result of the quick assistance and fast response by various roleplayers after lightning sparked a series of veld fires in Kromdraai over the weekend.
Four fires caused by lightning strikes swept through open land in the Kromdraai area over the weekend – but thanks to good teamwork, a tragedy was diverted.
BCI Security’s System Developer and Administrator Paul Catlett said a brief thunderstorm struck at about 16:30 on Saturday, October 8.
“Four fires were seen by keen eyes at the BCI K9 training collage. Thanks to a quick response, messages were distributed on social media requesting for assistance. While battling unpredictable winds, the fire was soon out of control. BCI members together with the community and Mogale City Fire Department fought the contain the fire until past 18:30 when it was under control and considered safe.
“The community of Kromdraai would like to express its most sincere gratitude towards BCI Security, Emergency Control SA ECSA, Roodekrans Neighborhood Watch, Mogale City Fire Department’s Benidict Manaka, Pamela Mothibe and Grace Latakgomo. Also to Cindy Jansen van Vuuren, representing ward 39 and Geoff Ramsay, without your assistance and fast response the situation could have led to loss of homes and livestock being.”
