Department responds after ongoing sewage issue at Noordheuwel Clinic sparks concern
Ongoing infrastructure failures leave the community uneasy as health concerns grow near a busy Krugersdorp public clinic.
The Gauteng Department of Health has issued a statement regarding the persistent sewage leak at the Noordheuwel Clinic.
As initially reported by the Krugersdorp News on May 16, Ward 21 councillor Lynette du Toit raised alarm over the health risks the leak poses to both patients and staff. The issue has reportedly persisted since 2023, prompting frustration from residents and mounting pressure on both the Mogale City Local Municipality and provincial health authorities.

According to the West Rand District Health Services, safety at the clinic is being prioritised through routine environmental inspections.
Safety at the clinic is ensured through bi-annual risk assessments by our Environmental Health unit,” the department said in a statement.
“There is ongoing collaboration between the West Rand District Health Services and Mogale City. Both entities are committed to promptly addressing any infrastructure-related issues to maintain a safe and functional healthcare environment.”
The department further stated that the Environmental Health Unit regularly conducts inspections to ensure that the clinic and the surrounding environment meet required health and safety standards.
Despite these reassurances, residents remain deeply concerned. Sewage continues to seep through the ground, with fears that it is contaminating the local groundwater.
With Krugersdorp already facing broader sewage challenges, community members are calling for urgent action and permanent solutions.
