Sinkhole danger: Avoid R563 towards Hekpoort, warns councillor
Councillor Gwen Britz warns motorists to avoid the sinkhole area and not to move barriers, as the road could collapse under vehicles.
With the sinkhole just past the R563 and N14 intersection towards Hekpoort still affecting traffic, Councillor Gwen Britz is warning residents to drive safely.
She confirmed that, as of January 9, the main road and the temporary diversion remain closed. Despite this, some motorists are driving dangerously close to the sinkhole.
“Drivers have created their own paths by opening gates to private property, even breaking locks, to bypass the official closures,” Britz said.
She stressed that motorists must not move the barriers or attempt to drive over the area, as the road could collapse under a vehicle.

Britz emphasised that the road is unsafe and advised motorists to use alternative routes.
The Krugersdorp News reached out to Mogale City Local Municipality’s head of communications, Adrian Amod, who said it is a provincial road and the responsibility of the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport.
“There are plans to restore the road, but the municipality cannot commit as it is not our responsibility.”
He acknowledged that motorists are taking shortcuts and said it is a problem.
“Trucks are also using these shortcuts, which will be flagged with the department, to make them aware, as it is a problem,” Amod concluded.
